Camping Oregon (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (June, 1999)
Author: Rhonda and George Ostertag
Average review score:

great campground guide
This is a very helpful campground guide for Oregon. Each listing gives a description of the campground and its surroundings, as well as vital stats like how many campsites there are. It includes out of the way forest service campgrounds with no amenities, as well as larger state campgrounds with many spaces and RV hookups, so this is a great guide for all campers.

Camping Out in the Yellowstone 1882
Published in Paperback by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (May, 1994)
Authors: Mary Bradshaw Richards and William W. Slaughter
Average review score:

A must read for lovers of Yellowstone History
Mary Bradshaw Richards was one of the first women to enter the park on vacation. Many men visited the park for reasons from surveying to vacationing. This story tells the story of Yellowstone from the point of view of one of it's first tourists. An interesting read for women.

Camping With the Corps of Engineers
Published in Paperback by Cottage Publications (May, 1997)
Authors: Spurgeon L. Hinkle and United States
Average review score:

Best book on the subject
This book is the best book on the subject... period! It lists EVERY campground in the USA that offers camping for 50% off. And, that is NOT upped prices....you actually get 50% off the posted prices so you can see you actually get 50% off. It has maps, contact information, and lists in detail all about each campground. It ranges from the primitive (like nothing except an area to sleep or whatever) to the full-service ones.

I highly recommend this book. There's NOTHING like it.

Canal Parks, Museums and Characters of the Mid-Atlantic
Published in Paperback by Wakefield Press (15 August, 1999)
Author: Kate Mulligan
Average review score:

A Must-Have for the Serious Canaler
Kate Mulligan's new book is a must for the glove compartment of all serious canal fans! She gives detailed descriptions of canal sites in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, focusing not only on the places, but on the people, "the characters," who worked to make their parks a reality. Kate highlights sites along most of the 19th century canals in the three Mid-Atlantic states, describing their history and current events sponsored by each of the canal parks. The book includes related, noncanal places of interest, such as the Brunswick Railroad Museum, the Johnstown Flood Museum and the Eckley Miners' Village. A great gift for anyone who loves travel and the transportation history of the Mid-Atlantic.

Canyon Country Parklands: Treasures of the Great Plateau
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (May, 1993)
Authors: Scott Thybony and Margaret Sedeen
Average review score:

A very good overview of the Colorado Plateau region
I am a Colorado Plateau freak, I must confess. As this book so excellently shows, every nook, every niche of that region is festooned with some new, arresting wonder, or so it seems.

Canyon Country Parklands is first remarkable for its photography. I have seldom seen the essence of this beautiful region captured so well. Indeed, many of the photos catch that magical light that seems to leap from the rock walls themselves. Even those parks long photographed, such as Zion National Park, attain a new height in beauty through the pictures in this book. A magnificent effort!!

The text is very readable and captures much of the magic of this region as well. I especially recommend the sections on Plateau wildlife and on the High Plateaus. The maps are also useful in reconnoitering one's position in this never-ending tableau of light and rock. You will enjoy this book to hilt, and its reasonable price makes it a remarkable bargain.

Canyon Country Wildflowers (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (March, 1998)
Author: Damian Fagan
Average review score:

Absolutely delightful
The Colorado Plateau country of southern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Arizona is justifiably famous for its magnificent scenery, but the stunning wildflowers are less widely appreciated. Fagan's "Canyon Country Wildflowers" is the best guide to these treasures that I've yet seen. The photographs are absolutely top-notch (sometimes I browse the guide, just daydreaming...), often showing the entire plant in its natural habitat. Likewise, the collection is relatively complete. Flowers are organized by colors and typically easy to find. To top it off, the book is relatively compact and durable in the field. Nowadays, I don't head south without it. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

The Capacity for Wonder: Preserving National Parks
Published in Paperback by The Brookings Institution (August, 1995)
Author: William R. Lowry
Average review score:

CHEERS Mr. Lowry! Yet, aren't we now in need of a sequel?
I've lived in, worked for, and studied the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) and I can confirm that Lowry has done his homework well. This book is more than just a voice crying in wilderness. Lowry not only exposes the problems, he offers very viable solutions that merely need the political support of the common man to be implimented. Unfortunately, since this book's publication things have gotten worse, especially in Canada. One of my biggest frustrations has always been that the American public doesn't know the extent to which self-serving congressional interests are ruining our national treasures by preventing the NPS from doing its congressionally mandated mission of historic and natural preservation. It's not just budget cuts folks! As Lowry explains, its mega-cooperation owned concessions exploiting visitors at the expense of the very ecological health of parks in the name of "visitor services." It's scientific research intentionally poorly funded and results ignored, or worse yet, severely censored before they are allowed to be released to the general public. And it's all here, well documented in "The Capacity for Wonder" including scores of interviews with rangers from all over the continent who haven't given up... yet. This book is for all of us rangers who dare not speak because we have to feed our families, and for all you voters and tax payers who do "GIVE A DAMN!" but until now, just don't quite have enough accurate information to act.
